----------------------------------------------The Shoe Factory
One of the most frequently asked questions during the tours is: "Did any inmates escape from OSR "Ohio State Reformatory"?" We obviously answer yes and they eagerly await an interesting story or two. One of the more humorous stories is as follows: It seems some time in the operation of the shoe factory at OSR, an inmate, tired of living in a cell here, decided to convince his coworkers to help him escape. Now how he convinced them to help him without themselves escaping is a question for another time. Part of the escape plot included the inmate climbing into the shipping crate filled with new shoes, and then the inmate would be free once shipped out of the confining walls of OSR. Now at this time, the shoe factory manufactured shoes for various state agencies and organizations. During a period of time that the guard was out of the room, the inmate climbed into the crate and his coworkers piled stacks of new shoes on top of him. They then proceeded to nail the top onto the crate. The inmate patiently waited for the truck to pick up the crate he was in and begin transportation. After the inmate felt the movement of the truck come to a halt, he waited once again for the right opportunity to break from his new found cell. Once he heard silence for an extended period of time, he knew it was safe to escape from the crate. He kicked and kicked until the first board broke loose, then it became easier to pry away the boards. As he stood up from the scattered shoes and broken boards, he found he had kicked himself right into the Ohio Pen in Columbus, Ohio. Needless to say, he wasn't sent back to Mansfield, and he received a new cell in Columbus.
